XML Sitemap and Search Console
The CMS should generate a root-level XML sitemap containing canonical, indexable URLs with absolute addresses. Submit it in Google Search Console and reference it in robots.txt. Update lastmod only when the page content, structured data or important links change—not for a copyright-year edit alone.
URL Migration and Canonical Control
If the new site replaces legacy paths such as /aboutus, /contact or /privacypolicy, map each old URL to the closest new page with a permanent redirect. Keep one preferred canonical URL per page and include only those canonical URLs in the XML sitemap.
Is an HTML sitemap the same as an XML sitemap?
No. The HTML sitemap helps users and internal navigation. The XML sitemap is primarily a machine-readable URL discovery file for search engines.
Where should the XML sitemap be hosted?
Hosting it at the site root is usually the clearest option because it can cover the whole site.
Should every URL be included?
Include the canonical, indexable URLs you want in search. Exclude admin, duplicate, parameter, staging, noindex and broken pages.
Does submitting a sitemap guarantee indexing?
No. A sitemap helps discovery but does not guarantee crawling, indexing or ranking.
How should old URLs be handled?
Redirect each valuable old URL to the closest relevant new URL and update internal links to point directly to the new address.
